The CDM Foundation funded 50% of the costs to renovate two of the campuses athletic fields, with
the balance of funds raised by the Football, Lacrosse, Soccer and Track & Field Booster clubs, and the CDM Boosters.
The $75,000 project began in the spring with a complete survey of the irrigation system by Sports Field Services,
a local commercial landscape contractor who had just completed the field renovation at the Newport Harbor High School stadium.
The Newport-Mesa School District assisted with irrigation repairs by replacing three valves and installing two quick coupler
stations adjacent to the fields that will allow supplemental watering if needed.
Beginning the week after
the June graduation ceremony, old field equipment and landscaping rock was removed from around the track field, and then Sports
Field Services made subsequent improvements to the irrigation system including new sprinkler heads, re-leveled the fields
with 250 tons of sand, reseeded over the existing sod and installed new sod in heavily damaged areas.
The project included an intensive 10-week maintenance period through September 4, during which the fields are watered
three times a day, mowed two to three times per week and fertilized and aerated monthly.
Now that
renovation is complete, a committee representing the four primary sports teams will be formed to oversee the ongoing field
maintenance. This committee will also begin discussions with the District to develop a plan to renovate the remaining
athletic fields.
